Maternity vs. Creative work

in Jul 23, 2024
Hey everyone,

I’m excited to kick off this new section of our website, where we dive into all things life and creativity, just real talk. Today, I want to share a bit about my latest adventure – becoming a mom while juggling the whirlwind of being a Creative Director. Spoiler alert: it’s been a ride!

So, I’ve just had my first baby. I’m now the proud mother of a tiny human who’s adorable, unpredictable, and completely turned my world upside down. Before this little bundle of joy arrived, my days were filled with illustrating new prints, brainstorming campaigns, and designing sillouethes. Now, my days start with a mix of baby giggles and the occasional diaper disaster.

Adapting to this new routine has been… interesting. One minute I’m in a meeting discussing the next launch, and the next I’m trying to decode the meaning behind my baby’s cries. It’s like learning a whole new language – baby talk meets fashion speak.

But let’s be real, balancing maternity and creative work isn’t just about managing time; it’s about managing energy. Some days, the inspiration flows effortlessly. Other days, it’s a struggle to even find matching socks, let alone come up with a groundbreaking idea. And that’s okay. I’ve learned to embrace the unpredictability, to laugh at the chaos, and to remind myself that it’s all part of the journey.

One of the funniest moments so far? Trying to take a Zoom call with a baby strapped to my chest. I thought I had it all under control until my little one decided it was the perfect time to test out their vocal range. But honestly, those moments of unpredictability have brought a new kind of creativity to my work. They’ve taught me to think on my feet and find inspiration in the unexpected.

To all the new moms out there trying to balance work and maternity – I see you. Remember to give yourself grace, take it one day at a time, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s a partner, family member, or colleague, having a support system makes a world of difference.

So, here’s to all the multitasking mamas and creative souls finding their rhythm. Let’s embrace the messiness, celebrate the small victories, and keep pushing boundaries in both our personal and professional lives.

Stay creative, stay inspired, and most importantly, stay you.

Until next time,
Lu.
